I have a number of these penstemons and all of them are in partial shade. I have found them to be practically foolproof, surviving horrible heat / drought / baked-clay soil. Hummers love them. They're not fussy about watering, hanging on and blooming with less than optimal conditions. A very xeric plant.

I've always know this as Bridges Penstemon after I found a quart of this plant locally in 2006 and planted it. It didn't bloom until the Summer of 2007 and I loved it!
Later in 2007, I decided to plant Bearded Irises in the flowerbed that it was in and got rid of everything. I wished I hadn't, because a few years ago, I started getting rid of the Irises and this Spring I planted 3 Bridges Penstemon plants in the general area that I had the first one planted. I've been ordering from High Country Gardens since Spring 2005 and was pleasantly surprised that they offered it, but surprised that they showed their Western Only cowboy hat icon. Since I grew it before and it survived the Winter and it bloomed the following Spring, I thought to give it a try. I'm hoping they survive the coming Winter and bloom next year.
I noticed that the Agastaches towered over the Bridges Penstemon plants this year, so that might be the reason if they don't overwinter - they didn't get enough sun. If they don't come back next year, then I'll get them again and plant them where they aren't shaded by other plants.
