If I want Nasturtiums, I have to get them going early. Often I start them in pots to get an earlier start! With the extreme heat and intense sunlight (often all day long) of my area, Nasturtiums have difficulty continuing once the HOT part of the year starts. They usually tend to go away in summer, but I do love these plants, so I keep trying. Love those cute leaves and flowers! I just love to look at them! I do occasionally eat the flowers, but it's hard, because usually I just want to keep the flowers around to look at!

Invasive in San Diego County. It may even be considered a noxious weed. I live near a nature preserve, and it covers the shady hillsides next to the main entrance. It is pretty, but spreads very aggressively here. We have received very little rain here this year, and it is still everywhere! It is fragrant, but in my opinion it has a sickeningly sweet scent. Check your State/County invasive plant list before planting.

Honestly, I tried putting Nasturtiums in my salad but I did not like the pepper taste at all. So I just grow Nasturtiums as garden flowers because they are so pretty and because the hummingbirds love them also.

Most growing information I've seen recommends full sun and poor dry soil for nasturtium. However, I find that mine do best with a little part-shade and occasional water.

I like to use nasturtiums planted at top of a terraced wall to spill over and also in really tall pots, where they can trail down to the ground, providing a lovely curtain of green and blooms.

I used to use nasturtiums as a ground cover under the wine grapes as they always reseeded well. However, after a few years, they became a little too aggressive, covering the walkways too. Although I like the peppery taste, other family members found them to be a bit too spicy.

Leaves and buds good in salads - add a little "zing."
