A native of Florida; St. Lucie County is about its northernmost range. This is a clump-forming, many-branched shrub. It can be sprawling, but if cut back can form a wonderful hedge that withstands drought very well.
Leaves are simple, alternate & about 3-4 inches long with dark, rich green above & silvery underneath.
This is the sole larval host for the Bartram's scrub-hairstreak (Strymon acis) butterfly in south Fl. It is also a nectar plant for many other butterflies.
The oily seeds are enjoyed by birds & mammals.
There are male & female plants & both must be present for seeds to form.
