I just came upon this lovely small woodland flower in white bloom at Jenkins Arboretum in southeast PA. The species is native from southern & central Illinois through Pennsylvania down to Virginia & West Virginia to Tennessee & northern Alabama. It bears white to light pink, a short dense panicle of slender funnelform flowers with 5 lobes on the tip of the corolla; and blooming about a month in May-June. Each flower has three stamens and one slender style that bears one achene seed with a tuft of hairs so that the seed can float away in the air. It grows in moist, shady habitats in rich, organic soils. It is offered by some native plant nurseries.

Shoots have a tendency to root at nodes and send up new plants.
