Native to the rain forests of Southeast Asia, Aeschynanthus are perennial trailing to semi-trailing epiphytes that have become popular houseplants. They require bright light but no direct sun and a well draining potting medium. Some Lipstick Plants have thick, waxy succulent type foliage, while others have soft leaves. Most are drought tolerant and soil should be allowed to dry somewhat between watering. The flowers emerge from a calyx giving them the appearance of a bright tube of lipstick and the flower colors range in shades of bright red, orange or yellow. The Lipstick Plant looks great in a hanging basket with the stems trailing over the edge.
