This award-winning classic daffodil is rather unique in that while the tone of the petals get paler with age, the tone of the cup's color gets lighter.
Altruist was registered in 1965 by British hybridizer Frederick K. Board.
This cultivar was classified as a Division 2 (Large-cupped) daffodil until 1972, when it was reclassified as a Division 3 (small cupped) daffodil.
Altruist has also proved to be quite fertile, in both seed and pollen roles. It's been used as a seed parent 32 times; in the latter capacity, as a pollen parent, 27 times. Breeders in England, Northern Ireland, Latvia, and all over the United States have used Altruist in various breeding programs well into this century.
