I just discovered this new plant on the market in a neighbour's yard in southeast Pennsylvania. I did not know of this Japanese Spikenard (Aralia cordata) species formerly. I thought it was a golden cultivar of the American Spikenard, but not. The species is native to east Asia, and this golden leaved cultivar was found in a Japanese garden center and brought back to the USA. At first I thought the specimen in the neighbour's front yard was suffering from micronutrient deficiency from the yellow foliage, as all such plants give me that first impression. The River Birch above it is suffering a little bit from iron chlorosis in the barely acid soil.

In my zone 5 garden; in part sun and moist, humus rich soil, it has not grown larger than 12-18" and is devoured by some kind of insect each year. Since we're going into year 3, I may have to move it in hopes of finding its 'happy place'... LOL!
