There are about 20 species in the genus Tricyrtis, which is part of the Liliaceae, the lily family. These are mostly Asian natives, ranging from Nepal eastwards through China to Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the Phillipine Islands. The greatest number and diversity is in Japan. The Japanese name for Tricyrtis is "Hototogisu" which roughly translates to "cuckoo".

Tricyrtis are extremely hardy perennials and fall in the low maintenance category but definitely look better with some attention.

They do require shade and deep shade south of the Mason-Dixon line. They like a good, moist soil that is rich in organic matter. If they don't get the required amount of shade and moisture, the results will be brown foliage.

"Tricyrtis is a genus of the botanical family Liliaceae, known in English as Toad lilies. Its native range is from the Himalayas to eastern Asia, including China, Japan, Philippines and Formosa.

They are perennial herbaceous plants that grow naturally at the edge of forests. They prefer shade or part shade and rich, moist soil. Toad Lilies bloom in the fall. They are hardy enough to handle sudden changes of winter from mild to blustery cold."
