Genus of 7 small geophytic cactus species (with many subspecies and varieties, at times) from Texas and northern Mexico, south to Querétaro. Nearly endemic to the Chihuahuan Desert (except a few populations of A. trigonus which appear to its east). Usually spineless (except seedlings and some mature individuals of A. agavoides). No ribs. Tubercles are exaggerated, appearing leaflike on some plants (thus the name agavoides). Flowers are white to yellow or purplish pink. Large, fleshy taproot contains mucilage (used by native Americans as glue). Plants grow low, at ground level, or are somewhat buried. These cacti are generally slow growing and prefer excellent drainage in cultivation.
