I live in the Florida panhandle. We do get hard freezes in winter. Last year a leaf/branch was broken off the mother plant. I stuck it in the ground and left it over the winter. Although the part above ground died, I was very happy in spring to see that it had come back from the roots.

My plant tends to grow like a "wild child" and looks rather homely. Its arms/leaves can be either flat or triangle shaped. It grows "air" roots and seems to do best when pot bound. When you see white showing on the bud, it most likely will bloom that night. The blooms are delecate looking and, to my nose, smell like clove. Most definitely worth getting up in the middle of the night to see and smell.

Epiphyllum hookeri is a climbing cactus that can reach heights of six feet or more. This plant prefers a bright shady location and well draining soil. Bloom time is usually in the summer months. After the buds begin forming, they slowly swell and turn upward. On my plant, the flowers usually begin to slowly open in late evening and are fully opened by around 10:30 - 11:00 p.m. I've read that the flowers are fragrant but I have never detected a scent when my plant is in bloom.
