"Bloodgood' retains the purplish-red color better than the regular red-leaved variety of the Japanese Maple during the heat of summer and better than most any other Japanese Maple cultivar. (Most plants with a red leaf color during the whole growing season do lose some of the red color due to the loss of anthocyanin pigments during hot weather.) It is a little bit cold hardier than other red-leaved selections. In the 1970's & 80's I knew of a few green and red-leaved Japanese Maples growing in the Chicago, IL area in protected sites in the USDA Zone 5a belt. Now with some global warming I have seen more Japanese Maples growing in the Chicago area after 2000 AD. The Mid-Atlantic Region is loaded with too many Japanese Maples, especially red-leaved selections.

One of the better known Japanese Maples. Bloodgood is vigorous and dependable in sun to part shade with an upright habit and a graceful form. Height up to 20 - 25 feet. Palmate leaves are red till around August, then a somewhat bronze-red, scarlet in the fall.
Not as expensive as some of its contemporaries.
