    It seems to me that this Downy species, that is so similar to the Alleghany species (A. laevis), only differs in having tomentose hairiness under the leaves and a little above; that the leaves tend to be a little bigger, giving it a slightly coarser texture; and that the young unfolding leaves do not have a bronzy color. Most of the cultivars of tree type serviceberries come from the Alleghany or the hybrid Apple Serviceberry. This species is native from Maine to Iowa to northern Florida and Louisiana.
