This newer cultivar was taken from the Bailey Redosier Dogwood that is a variety of Cornus sericea that does not send out stolons (horizontal stems along the ground) like the regular common species. It is a compact form that only gets about 3 to 5 feet high rather than the typical 8 to 10 feet high. It also sends up a larger number of stems that have a great bright red color in autumn, winter, and early spring. It still bears white flower clusters and white berries, and gets a great red or red-purple fall color. It is becoming a popular plant on the market and should be. The big company of Proven Winners is the one that has brought it into the trade. One must still be sure to cut away any older stems to the ground that lose their red color when they become thicker and older. Never shear any Redtwig or Yellowtwig Dogwood shrubs as it causes stem canker disease.
