If one buys a Deutzia, this seems to be the best species in my opinion. This species is native to Japan. I remember in the 1980's it was sold a good amount from many Chicagoland nurseries to homeowners and landscape architects. It does have a reliable, nice, delicate, white flower display in May. Otherwise, it is a twiggy low shrub that does not have any other really showy feature, like other Deutzias. I recommended one for a neighbour lady back in northeast Illinois in the 1980's for her house foundation and she loved it. I had her prune it every year after it bloomed so as to keep it being neat, because these shrubs do become unkempt in time. The genus of Deutzia from East Asia is closely related to Mockoranges (Philadelphus), except that the former genus has 5-petal flowers rather than 4-petal flowers.
