This perennial is native from New Jersey & southeast Pennsylvania & Maryland down to central Florida to east Texas & Oklahoma through Missouri to southern Illinois & Indiana & Ohio. It grows in dry sites in part-shade as in the coastal plain and piedmont of the Carolinas. It attracts bees and butterflies to pollinate its white to pale lavender flowers blooming in August into October. It is in the Aster or Sunflower Family. One naturalist source does not recommend it for home landscapes, but if one does make one's landscape really naturalistic, it can be grown. Izel Native Plants in Maryland has sold it. I've only seen it once at Jenkins Arboretum in southeast PA; I never knew of it before as an ornamental horticulturist.
