I've only seen one tree of this species in a large front yard with an old house from the early 1800's in southeast Pennsylvania. It does have large leaves of 12 to 32 inches long x 7 to 12 inches wide that are bright green above and silvery-gray and downy beneath. It bears white, fragrant, solitary flowers about 8 to 14 inches wide in June. It also bears egg-shaped rose-colored follicle fruits in late summer. It is an uncommon species that occurs in spots from Ohio to Florida west to Arkansas and Louisiana.
