Phlox paniculata is widespread along stream banks and roadsides in the eastern United States everywhere but in Florida. It is the wild phlox you may see blooming in the summer with big balls of pink, lavender, or even white flowers. This species has given rise to many cultivated forms. 'Shortwood' is one that is believed to have come from P. 'David' and 'Eva Cullum'. It has brilliant pink flowers from mid summer into fall and is mildew resistant in full sun and good soil. It is a butterfly magnet, makes a great cut flower, and is super fragrant.
