This is one of three similar shrub palms that grow in the deep South USA. It is native from southeast North Carolina to southern Florida to east Texas in moist open woods, bottoms of rich slopes, and edges of floodplains. It is a trunkless fan palm that has fan-shaped, deeply divided leaves about 2 to 4 feet broad and long on long leaf stalks that do not have sharp marginal teeth of the similar Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens). It bears tiny white flowers in somewhat conspicuous clusters on 3 to 5 feet long stalks. It bears small, round, shiny, black berries in the fall. It likes part-shade best and in the wild grows in moist, rich soil of pH 5.5 to 6.5, but adapts to regular moist, well-drained soils in neutral reaction range and can tolerate some drought.
