Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is native to dry woodland areas in eastern and central North America. Unlike most Sedges that prefer moister soil, it does well in dry shade. It spreads slowly by rhizomes and can be used as a low-maintenance substitute for lawns in dry, shady areas. It also can be used as an attractive, fine-textured ground cover in shady, dry areas of the yard.

Pennsylvania Sedge grows in dry to moist woods in the mountains from West Virginia to Alabama and Georgia. It forms soft, grass-like, 15-inch clumps of very narrow, bright green leaves. The clumps spread quickly and are very soft and curling. The plant turns pale brown for the winter.

A lovely early-blooming sedge. The flowers look like dusty pompoms. Grows well under trees, even right up to the trunk. Very attractive with long, slender leaves that lean down gracefully.

The clumps get bigger each year, and underground runners shoot out and create new plants a few inches away. Can be divided in spring or fall.
