This is the North American variety of the Broadleaf Enchanter's Nightshade that is best as Circaea lutetiana canadensis. It has a large native range from Nova Scotia to North Dakota and south of all that into the South. It is a common woodland wildflower that is not so great because it produces stick-tight soft capsules with sharp hairs (seed burs) that catch onto any mammal hair or human clothing that touches it. It grows about 1 to 2 feet high with opposite leaves up to 5 inches long x 3 inches wide. It produces tiny white or pinkish-white flowers that are to 1/4 inch wide, each made of two petals deeply notched that make it look like 4 petals, two long white stamens, and two green sepals bending back. It grows in part shade to full light shade in moist, rich soils. It is a common weed in shade gardens. It is easy to pull up, but some of the rhizome roots stay in the soil to allow a plant to remerge. If the seed burs are present, best to pull out with a bare arm.
