Native to the North Coast Ranges of California and Oregon. Legend has it that its name commemorates Ida May, daughter of a stage coach driver who directed an early botanist to its locale.
The flower's unusual form is considered to be an adaptation to allow hummingbird pollination Flowers remain attractive for a long period.

Dichelostemma ida-maia’s natural habit is at the edges of woods, coastal grasslands, and mountainous regions from Mendocino County, CA, north to Oregon.
It is said that this is the only species in the genus Dichelostemma that is pollinated by birds.

    CARE:
Must be given dry condition during summer dormancy, and needs moisture in its growing season of spring and early summer. Seems to bloom better in full sun.
I'm not sure how this plant will do in hot humid summers (southern states), or in the more arid climates of the southwestern states.
