I have had this about ten years, central Maryland, I was sent a small one bare-root in the mail. No trouble rooting and growing, it has begun to sucker a fair amount in my loamy sandy soil, and blooms a bit, in partial shade from trees on the north and east.
  • Posted by ILPARW (southeast Pennsylvania - Zone 6b) on Dec 2, 2017 6:21 PM concerning plant:
This good-looking shrub, basically neat and clean, is a sort of wispy, medium-fine texture, open and sort of see-through shrub. (It is not massively thick like the over-planted Winged Euonymus Burningbush). Its native range is from a few spots in southern New York & New Jersey, southern Pennsylvania, down to central Florida to east Texas, into Arkansas, into southeast Missouri, southern Illinois & Indiana & Ohio, in rich soil in upland woods or along watercourses. It can sucker in favourable situations and then form colonies. Easily transplanted. It can be damaged by Euonymus Scale insects that pick on evergreen Asian euonymus species. It grows about 1.5 feet/year. The fruit is poisonous for humans to eat. Some Strawberry-bushes are offered by some large, diverse nurseries, some mail order nurseries, and native plant nurseries. So far, I have only occasionally seen this species planted at arboretums and professional landscapes in southeast PA and Delaware, not common or well-known.

Although it will tolerate full shade, Strawberry Bush fruits best grown in light shade. It is susceptible to Euonymus scale and has a high water requirement.
