Penstemon pinifolius has grown from a seedling in a 2-inch pot to a plant that is, after 2 years, 18 inches across and about 10 inches tall, not including the bloom stalks. It is planted in one of the raised beds filled with sandy loam compost, which is fast draining, with a top dressing of crushed granite (chicken grit).
I find the form of this penstemon very interesting as it is evergreen and has the appearance of a small shrub. It also provides winter interest in the garden.

CARE:
Because of the nature of its woody base and branches, it should not be pruned any lower than 4 inches in the spring. It blooms from early June until killing frost in the fall, with vivid orange blooms that are loved by hummingbirds. It will bloom heavier if deadheaded.
This plant also readily reseeds itself in my zone 8 garden. The seedlings are sturdy and transplant easily. Seed is easily harvested, but small.
Native to Southwestern USA, does well in low altitudes if summers are dry, and grows very well in high/dry altitudes. Does not grow well in the humid southern states.
I find that it will stay healthy in our Pacific Northwest winter/spring (heavy rain) if grown in a raised bed with fast-draining soil.

An evergreen here in zone 5. Xeric plant that blooms for a VERY long time. Has both red & yellow varieties. Spreading. Mine's gone from a 4" pot to covering a 3' section in 3 years. However, very low-growing, so don't put it behind taller plants or you'll never see it.
