Sugar Pine is a soft pine with soft, thin needles in bundles of 5 about 3 to 5 inches long and sort of twisted, and having fine white lines on all surfaces. The stalked, columnar cones without prickles are very large of 10 to 26 inches long, usually about 16 inches long; the longest cones of any American conifer. The young bark is smooth and gray and becomes gray-brown to purple-brown and is broken into scaly ridges. It grows to 175 to 200 feet high with a trunk of 3 to 5 feet in diameter. It is the tallest American pine species. It gets its common name from having a sugary substance in its sap. It is native to California and Oregon.
