The swollen bases of the stems and usually the thick roots have horizontal chambers inside, a feature which helps identify this deadly poisonous species. Its toxin rapidly affects the nervous system, causing severe convulsions and usually death. Children have been fatally poisoned by blowing whistles made from its hollow stems.
