The USDA Natural Resources Dept. says this plant is native to Florida, Puerto Rico & the Virgin Islands & introduced in Hawaii. It is native to tropical South America. It is an invasive species in Indochina, Africa, Australia, the Pacific Islands & India.
This is a very fast growing vine & can cover an arbor in no time. It is not suitable for Xeriscaping as it requires moist conditions.
It survives intense heat but will not take frost & cold.

Birds are quite fond of the fruits.
