Does anyone know what the name of this "giant" bromeliad is? She was gifted me by a friend here on NGA. This plant has leaves that are at least 4' long and she's about 4'x4' with a 2.5' flower stalk. The buds are just opening but the flowers appear to be orangey-yellow. The leaves are edged in spines.

My guess would be Bromeliad (Aechmea blanchetiana)

That was my guess also. It's one I saw all over florida and it is huge!

That could be it but from the photos I see, the color is all over the place.

I had a lady on FB say that she thought it was the Aechmea mulfordii 'Malva' and those photos and size descriptions fit what I see with mine.

Hopefully @SarasotaPatty will know what she gave me.

My thought is Aechmea as well. I was thinking one in the mulfordii group going by the current look of the flower bract and the 4' leaf.

Thanks, Scott. The flowers of the 'Marcelino' may be different but the plants sure look the same. I see that the 'Marcelino' is perhaps a var. of the 'Malva', and can take more direct sun than the 'Malva'. I will know a little bit more as the flowers mature.

Sorry Ken, no clue! Never saved tags for anything other than orchids in my yard, and half of those are long gone. The other brom is very similar, but the bloom is more orange...good luck ID'ing it.
