I can't believe it -- there's an auction that is about to close in about 3 hours for a new striped Fall 2019 introduction BLAME IT ON THE RAIN by Reedy1 (don't know who that hybridizer is, unfortunately), and when I just checked it was up to $1,007 -- WOW!

I've recently gotten into the stripes -- but I cannot afford any of those recent stripe-ies by any means. And I'm sure the reason this one seems so coveted is because it's a tet with that parentage by whoever the hybridizer is. I'll keep checking to see if it goes any higher...

Does anyone know who Reedy1 is? The daylily isn't showing as registered yet, and I'm dying to know who the hybridizer is.

Oh my goodness, now up to $1600.

I'm going down to my seedling bed to have a serious talk with the unbloomed seedlings. Big Grin

I just read that was the first fan of it sold, what if the seller lined out ten of the plants...how much will the 20th fan sell for?

Larry, good question. I have noticed that extremely desirable cultivars are rarely sold.
There are some that I want, that are apparently completely unavailable.

I love looking at the bid histories on these types of auctions. It was probably a really tough for the 2nd bidder to bid $255 for a plant, and now look at it.

Maybe I'll sell my car or a kidney or something and put in a last minute bid.

People love those broken color ones and like to use them in their hybridizing . This however, seems like the very definition of insanity to me, jmho. Hope that whoever wins this has a greenhouse.

Anyone who has $1600 to spend on a daylily, probably has more than one greenhouse. Just guessing.

All kidding aside, if this is your life's work and business, it's probably not a horrible investment. Say it ends up being $2,000. If you spend 3-4 years advancing your hybridizing program while it increases. In year 5, you have new seedlings that you can sell, and you can probably get your investment back by selling the original off in single fans.

Look how much people still pay for Mayor of Munchkinland and Undefinable. 10 fans x $200 breaks you even without taking into account the crazy new seedlings that may sell well on their own.

If you do this for a living, it's probably not so crazy. It's only crazy if you spend 8-12 hours a day auditing accounting or installing decks or making sure a family all gets fed and off to their extra-curriculars on time every day or whatever you have to do to make ends meet, and it's not an investment but a eye-catcher for your garden.

Just looked at the bidding history, while being very careful not to touch the Place Your Bid Here box.

Wow, I see the winning bid was $1,600 -- and the runner-up is one of our people here in our forum, although I don't know if he's still active or not. He has some wonderful striped/stippled seedling pictures that he's posted over in the Daylily Hybridizers Nook on Facebook, and I can see why he's so intent on getting more striped genetics.

Admmad, thanks for the input on who the hybridizer might be. Sounds like a really good guess, and maybe someone else here (Ahead, maybe?) could confirm it for us?
Betty
