We have several buds that look like this.


Haven't ever noticed them do this before. Is it normal. To me I would think they wouldnt bloom right.
Please give insight

The picture is not very clear, are there any bigger buds doing this too and have you cut any open to see if there are larvae inside?

Not all scapes just in an area. Same with buds. Saw red spider mite looking insects and treated with elimator. Will get back if i find larve
Not a sign of any bug maybe we killed whatever off after damage.

Your getting your camera a bit too close causing the photos to be out of focus.

It's really dry here in Florida. I'm getting a lot of bud drop. It shows as undeveloped buds and buds that have turned yellow. I water a lot, but that doesn't make up for rain.

I have the same type buds on some and blooms disfigured,,

I sprayed soap and water diluted on them in early april before buds
for aphids..however I have kept close watch and also spraying for rust
twice a month preventing it...

Although there are a number of things that can cause daylilies to drop buds (thrips, Lopidea confluenta, environmental conditions etc.) this is probably a good thread, and good time of year, for a reminder to look out for the more serious problem of daylily gall midge:

I have had some periodic bud drop and streaked flowers and it looks like thrips are the culprit. So last year, I tried a Bayer product, called Rose & Garden Care. It was a granular formula and systemic. So I put it around the base of my daylilies in the two gardens that I had issues in the past. I applied it the 3rd week of May and it was supposed to be good for 6 weeks. For once, my Final Touch had pretty flowers and I didn't see any other evidence.

So this year, I was looking for the granular form and came across the liquid concentrate. So I decided to try this. Today I did my first application. I kind of liked it better because I could target just the lower leaf and crown area. I do need to go back and see if it will last for 6 weeks or if I have to reapply sooner. I do like that since I could specifically target the plant, and I don't have any other flowers blooming in the area of the daylilies at this time, that there should be less harm to the bees.

When I first started planting day lilies, they were a no fuss plant. I love them! But now, on top of Day Lily Leaf Streak which has spread to virtually all my plants, I have just discovered Day Lily Gall Midge in my garden this year. I live in Nova Scotia and have many day lilies. I have not brought in any new ones in many years so I am unsure of how they found me in my rural setting. I have been going out daily and removing any deformed buds. I read that freezing them for 48 hours kills the larvae. Gone are the days of the no worries no care day lilies! But I still love them!
