Hello Garden lovers :

Is there anyone who might help me to find the name of this plant I discovered recently along the river Maas in Holland ?
It's unknown here-even by famous botanists.
You will please me a lot ! Also a name of a botanist who can help me is very welcome.

I'm grateful -Rien

I thought the same thing. I wondered if it might be a kind of Sidalcea but haven't found an actual match. Those rather angular looking flower buds really remind me of something Thinking

I'm looking at this because sooby mentioned it to me. I'm not sure it's actually in the Malvaceae. I can't assure myself from the pics that the stamens are definitely monadelphous.

Maybe it's in the Malvales but a different family. I'm not familiar enough to search. If even famous botanists over there don't know, what chance do I have?

Buds remind me of Cistus.
Puzzled by leaves.
Do leaves and flowers actually belong together?

I wondered the same thing, but there do appear to be stems with buds (?) in the foliage picture when enlarged, although they're not very clear. Having said that, the foliage looks more low-growing than the flower picture suggests.

Did the botanists say it was in the Malvaceae?

Those flowers do really looks like malvaceae, with angular looks calyx we would see in some mallow like Malva neglecta, or sida sp and the blooms also looks malvaceae. probably some Uncommon Malva Sp... or related genus

I was thinking there were some similarities with that one but the stamens aren't orange. Apparently there have been hybrids from it with other Malvaceae, I wonder if it could be something like that?

The problem is solved by a South American biologist Jennifer Tate :

It' s Tarasa tenella , with bigger flowers than normal.

Thanks to everybody for looking and thinking !

The Plants of the world link Tiffany @purpleinopp provided (thanks !) shows it as having 6 synonyms in 3 other genera in the Malvaceae. Even the taxonomists have trouble nailing it down!๐Ÿง

Looks like Tarasa is a strictly South American genus. Given that the Netherlands have been a hotspot for horticulture since before the Americas were discovered I wouldn't be surprised at any oddity showing up there. They're always searching out new plants. And breeding them to improve their horticultural merits.

Best Ann :

in the west of Holland indeed they breed and 'develop' new races etc of plants/flowers. This particular one was found in the middle of nature along the river Maas [in the Southeast] . As far as I know it was never a commercial horticulture one. But I hoped somebody here would recognize .
Because of digging [to give the river more space] very old seeds did sprout and so this one was discovered next to some more adventives.
Until about 75 years ago in this area also many more 'strangers' were found because of seeds , who arrived from Belgium at the riverbank . There was a big area of wool exploitation in Belgium these times. This wool was imported from Australia and elsewhere.
And the river Maas transported all those seeds [originally from Australia etc]to the south of Holland.

Green greetings--Rien
