Good morning,

Can anyone identify this daylily? I got it 5 years ago, without a name!

Moved to Daylily forum.
Members can give suggestions but with over 97,000 registered daylilies, it's hard to get a correct ID from photos. You would have to grow a suspected one side by side.

Yeah, that is going to be a difficult one to ID. I have a NOID that I love and it is one of a few that I don't care that it has no name... it is a lovely, large, late, plain red. I should probably give it a garden name, but haven't.

If you remember where you got it, maybe ask the person if he/she can try to retrace it. You have a gorgeous hemerocallis there and I am sure that its name can be found. It is all a matter of patience and curiosity. Good Luck!! Rolling my eyes.

I think it is possible to ID your plant. There are thousands registered, most of them are extinct and don't even exist anymore, of those we know it is not a new one. It also has distictive characteristics. An eye, that funny shape on the petal (crispate? I don't know the word) and it appears to be a diploid.

How tall is it?
Has it ever rebloomed in the fall for you?
Does it have a fragrance?
What does the foliage look like in the winter?
I am guessing it is a bud builder, and that the branching is somewhat poor from the photos?

What size is the flower, like from one side to the other if you put a tape measure on it?
Can you get some more photos of it? Did you take these photos in the afternoon/evening? If so, can you take some in the morning.

I believe it is an older variety.

This is a long shot, but it does meet the stats we have (unless unknown stats I listed above don't match). The best way to know is to order one and grow it for a while to compare. At any rate if yours dies, or you lose it for some reason, this may be a suitable replacement.

Here's FELLOW as it grew here in my garden about 10 years ago. I don't think it's this one.

Thank you all for your responses! I greatly appreciate them!

After searching the daylily database, my plant looks like 'Royal Flycatcher', and it came from @bluegrassmom in a box of mixed daylilies several years ago.

Did you contact bluegrassmom? I am sure she will be happy to id it, although perhaps it was one of her seedlings? Of course, if you got it without a name, I guess that suggests she did not know the ID. We all have those.

royal flycatcher appears to be quite a bit redder in color than your photos. It is hard to tell the purples/reds, my camera does a bad job sometimes depending on the lighting. It is also 48 inches tall, so that will be pretty distinctive comparing to the plant in question.

I do think it looks like Purple Many Faces. There are several it could be. There would really be no way to know other than to order a handful of contenders and grow them, or if by chance the person you got it from remembers the name. Sometimes I don't remember names but if someone throws it out to me, I recognize it.

Sometimes I too have plants I just give away or sell cheap without messing w putting names on them, even though I may know them.

Thank you all for your responses!

I did contact the seller, and I got no response. I also noticed that the plant is on her list of plants that she owns. She sent wonderful fans of daylilies, including a box of unnamed varieties, (that included this one), that have all grown beautifully in our previous garden, as well as our current one!

Here's another picture of the plant from our previous garden. It is more of a reddish color than purple, with scapes that are >3 feet. I'll have to check to see if it is scented !

@bluegrassmom, Teresa is probably pretty busy these days, but I am sure she will pop on this site and respond at some point.
