Julia that is a really lovely color of hellebore. I really love it when they begin to really open up.
I took advantage of the after Valentine's Day sales and am trying miniature roses again. There were four little plants to a pot so I hope they will fill up the patio pots and not succumb to black spot. bought one of each color they had: white, red, peach, pink and striped.
My hellebores are coming into their own now too. Have moved so many around the blooms aren't as big on some plants, but lots of blooms to come yet. Aren't these the best plants? What other perennial will bloom from January until May and a couple of my volunteers will start blooming again in July and August. Some beds I am converting from shade to perennial or combination fruit and hellebores. They aren't looking nearly as good as last year
The pig squeak is also just beginning to bloom
I couldn't pass up this variety of hellebore I stumbled across at Costco. Heck if I know where I will put it may have to put it in a patio pot so I can admire it (and also wait to see where all the hostas are exactly.
Although you can't tell very well, here is an area I am trying to naturalize in snow drops. I maybe adding some Spanish hyathins and daffodils in drifts also. Haven't decided yet.
Hi Jewell,
Good luck with those mini roses, sure are cute!! Your hellebores are gorgeous!!! Love that first picture and the snow drops. I planted a few of the snowdrops last fall so, excited about seeing them bloom. Had to laugh because I bought that very same hellebore at Costco.
Did you buy any of the bagged perennials? I bought heuchera 'Picasso' and a couple of tall Phlox from Costco. I have good luck with those when you get them early.
Need to do another walk about to see what's blooming.
Didn't see the heuchera. Have a lot of phlox I bought 3-4 yrs ago at Costco. Took for ever for them to take off (were bare roots), but am now dividing and moving them around. Here are some photos from last summer
It was great finding such an unusual leafed hellebore so reasonably priced. There were only two left when I was at my local Costco. Wonder if they will be getting more. The leaf color is a great match for the snow angel heuchera. Was thinking of removing the marmalade heuchera to give the hellebore a home.
My understanding that this hellebore like a bit more sun. Google the growing requirements for this one before you plant. I bought 3 or 4 of this type last year but they are not appearing this year. Molbaks had 40% off last year.
Love you Phlox, has to be one of my favorite perennials. Yours is spectacular!!!!!! I saw that some of mine were showing new growth when I was out a few days ago.
Came back from our 10 day trip to the full chorus of frogs, crocus in bloom, lots more birds chirping, the daffs about ready to open, and SUNSHINE. Ahh. I now remember why we like to get away in late February...
Jewell---the phlox is fantastic. I agree though---sure takes a while to get it established. I'm hoping to put in an additional 18-20 phlox 'David' near by chicken coop bed this year. It seems to take about 4-5 years for them to look like yours though! Worth the wait for the fragrance and late July flowers.
Welcome back Kosk, and lovely photos. Nice to know about the aubrieta, I have always struggled with that myself. Since I have acidic soil, no point to keep knocking my head against the wall.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.
Thanks, guys. Surrounding that hellebore is the extremely evil 'goutweed' (identified for me by Deb/BH on DG a few years ago.) Eradication attempts have failed, so I've taken Deb's advice to just coexist with it. NEVER plant it. It came with my house. Very few plants can compete with it, so I've spent a lot of money on shade plants in this bed that just can't compete with the goutweed, unfortunately , and they don't return the following year. Astilbe are ok here. Plus the Japanese iris look promising.
Confession--I just purchased two of these in full bloom, so they have been coaxed in a greenhouse. Not sure if they will be a March bloomer for me in the future or not. Very fragrant.
All gorgeous. I am so envious. Oregon is a place I would love to live. It seems made for all the flowers I love. I have tried hellebore once or twice but not successful. I think I over did the wet and shady part. Up here that is almost a dead zone. Shady as in no direct sun at all. I have pasque flowers that get bigger clumps each year in the full sun. About the first to show their fuzzy little buds even with snow all around and front on the buds. Love them also.
