Someone asked me a question today that I had no answer for. So I thought I would throw it out here to the experts.. Can Iris be planter under or near black walnut trees without problems caused by the trees. They were not worried about shade , but about any chemical type interaction caused by the trees. Anyone have any experience with any issues?

I've got both bearded and PCI's in the root zone of a black walnut to no ill affects. They are supposed to have allelopathic properties that inhibit the growth of plants, but it hasn't been true for me. I've got Canna, Euonymus, PCI's, Cornus, Phormium, Carex, Heuchera, Bamboo, Podocarpus, Pittosporum, Ilex, Spirea, Lobelia... all doing fine.

The other thread Walnut Tree is one I started. There is a great link that greene posted about plants that can be grown around or under black walnut trees. Iris is on the list.
