When it's hard to separate your dogs and your plants, some plants run the risk of getting stomped into oblivion or dug out. Here's a low-cost solution.

For those of us that garden with pets, there are all sorts of innovative ways to get around things.

My affliction is cats, fresh tilled and planted beds are suitable for them to dig in. I've not tried the tomato cages but use similar deterrents and it works. Once the plants are established there is less danger except for the dogs watering them. Haven't figured out the answer for that one yet.

Thanks for sharing the good idea! Thank You!

Great idea! I ran outside and placed two tomato cages since reading your article.
Tomorrow I will make more cages for special plants.

Great idea but what to do with a 15 month old 95 lb "puppy" ... he has trampled and totally destroyed so many shrubs and plants. I spent weeks digging out three long rows of shrubbery because he'd literally run through and over them trying to catch lizards. He sat on some and broke many branches. They looked so terrible within a few weeks of him being a member of the family and I love him more than I did the particular shrubs. After removing the shrubbery I lined the side of the house with container plants and he still runs around them trying to get the lizards. Smaller containers he still knocks over and I find myself cleaning up the mulch and soil that ends up on the sidewalk but the larger, heavier plants he can't budge. Smiling I've got one large bed that he still tramples and runs through if he gets a chance so I've been thinking of some sort of barrier around that area but tomato cages won't work ... he thinks they are something for him to yank up and play with.
