My purple moon cacti is growing flowers since going outside. Will insects need to pollinate flowers so seed develops? Once I get seed how do I go about goring it? I live in zone 7a so once fall comes its too cold outside everything has to be inside until May.

Keith, are you talking about Gymnocalycium mihanovichii? I assume you don't mean a columnar cactus with a round purple top that has been grafted onto it.

Put your cactus soil in a container about 4 inches deep. Make sure there is excellent drainage. Water the soil. Shake the seeds onto the top of the soil and cover with no more than about 1/8" of soil. Put into a clear plastic bag to keep soil moist and so that you can see the growth. Keep warm (at least 70°). It takes about 1 to 4 weeks for germination depending on conditions. Don't put the container in direct sunlight but do place where there is bright light. Repot after several months.

You do know that the 'Moon Cactus' that are grafted must be grafted to a green growing cactus. These plants produce no food for themselves due to no green. So they must get it from the plant grafted to. If they produce seed, I hope it is reverted to the past all green types otherwise as soon as the seed germinates, it will die. I had some all yellow plants germinate and as soon as they used up what was in the seed pod, they died. They propagate this cactus by the little off shoots they produce. And graft onto another stock.
Rare that some bloom. Great for you.

Yes I'm talking about grafted cactus, I heard the purple color produces babies that grow on their own roots.
