There's an offering of daylily seeds going right now, and I am very tempted since it's a fabulous deal! even though I know almost nothing about growing daylilies from seed and next to nothing about daylilies period except I love them.

So I've been wondering if anyone has any experience wintersowing daylily seeds and, if so, how did it go?

(I prefer to wintersow whenever possible as it has proven the most reliable seed-starting method of those available to me.)

Hi, Kyla:

I've not had any experience wintersowing daylily seeds, but someone here may have some advice. You might also want to post over on the daylily forum here.

Good luck!

Well, months later I am here with an interim report: I did it, and it worked.

Green Grin!

I have sprouts of all the seeds. Maybe in a few days there will be something to take pictures of. As usual, wintersowing takes care of stratification and all that. So simple!

The hardest part about it was writing the names of the dl this X dl the other on the jugs. Some of those names are long and then you've got two of them and occasionally three!

I have not done daylilies before great to know it works

...as for the long names I often just number the jugs and keep a paper copy of the real names and make a tag for the transfer pots.

You know, I thought of that. But that would have required me to keep track of the paper and I am terrible at keeping track of paper. Much safer to write names on jugs. I may or may not be able to keep track after they are planted out.... My good intentions in that regard are often not carried all the way through. Things keep happening! Whistling Hilarious!

But yes, wintersowing dls does work beautifully. I will see if I can get some decent pictures today or maybe tomorrow. Evidence. nodding

I ws'd this year for the first time, and did WS a few daylilies. I also read about the DENO method of sprouting them in the fridge (takes care of the cold strat. requirement) if you want to do it quicker than wait for WSing.

Just a suggestion: I find that if I keep a document on my computer (ie I have a WS journal to plot the success of the seedlings as well my inside seeds progress. I use an excel spread sheet, but keep track of other things like bare roots I planted inside to give them a head start (terrible winter here in Mass. this year!)

So this way you dont have to keep track of a paper...you can save the file on your computer or do something as simple as send an email to yourself, and cut/paste or forward for updates :o)

Good idea. Maybe I'll try something like that.

I opened all the jugs of dls -- I was a bit too confident: two of them show no sprouts. Don't know if they're just slow or what (some are just now barely showing, so these two may yet.) I can resow those two crosses but not today! I am tired out from other gardening stuff.

I'll try to get a picture though, in a while. Thumbs up

Pictures -- by the time I got back out there the wind had kicked up and kept blowing the jug lids closed, so these aren't all that great but they do show evidence! Rolling my eyes.

Today I took the tops all the way off the daylily seedlings. There are two more jugs, one with nice healthy seedlings and one in which they have not emerged at all, but this tray would only hold 10 jugs so those other two are conferring elsewhere. Green Grin!
Thumb of 2015-04-12/kylaluaz/efe50a
Most jugs I write the names on the top but for these I was foresighted enough to write the parents' names on the bottom part of the jugs. So it was easy to take those tops off and discard them.

And, all transplanted, with a numbered list of parent names, and numbered tags in the pots!

No idea where I'm going to grow all these out, but by the time they're needing to be put in the ground, I'll have an idea of where.
