A friend just got this in his fresh food (CSA) box today. What is it?

They are about an inch in size.

Not positive but they look like Jerusalem Artichokes. (which are not from Jerusalem and not artichokes)

The ones from your CSA box are kind of small. Maybe instead of trying to peel them, try this...
wash then and scrub with a stiff brush. Coat with olive oil and some salt, roast in the oven. As soon as they are cool enough to handle, squeeze out the cooked flesh, discard the peel. You can eat the flesh like you would mashed potatoes or add it to a lovely homemade soup.

I've never eaten sunchokes but I've heard they are very good! I love the pretty yellow blooms.

As with any 'new' food, start slowly. Sunchokes are too gassy for many people.

I have used them instead of potatoes in making Latkes/potato pancakes. Really good!

It's been a long, long time since I've grown them... but I thought they had a very odd taste when they were cooked -- can't really describe it, but I didn't care for them.

I used to grow them just because they are so pretty (and unstoppable). Even though I can't eat the the roots I have grown them to share with others.

They are delicious, Arlene! I like them best prepared as you do with potato salad. They have something nutty and something that reminds you of artichoke in their taste.
