I was amazed at it, wonder how rare it is? I fed it some sugar water to get the photo.

Yes it's a European, but finding them in black is rare I've heard. I found out sometimes bees can have white eyes but those don't fly well.

We haven't seen many here but my brother sees a lot of them in his neighborhood.

The black honey bee, according to the man who helped me get started in bee keeping, says it is a German honeybee. He sees them regularly at his home and has been trying to find the wild hive for several years.

It would be hard to follow a black bee back to its hive. It would blend in very well with the plants.
