Constructing a Garden Tuteur

Garden tuteurs, or obelisks, give your garden upright forms to train vines and other climbing plants. They also add interest to an area by lifting the eye upward. Tuteurs can be as plain, or as ornate, as you wish them to be. As simple as a few bamboo canes lashed together, or as elaborate as a tall metal structure fused into a rather fussy design, these pyramid shaped frames have been part of gardens for hundreds of years.

In the past it has been loads of fun building these out of gnarly twisting, crooked or undulating driftwood. I called them teepee planters. Only heartwood of pine, cedar or cypress were employed. Many of these pieces of driftwood were hundreds of years old. Funny thing is that I have never seen or heard of tuteurs and I thought I was starting something new ! My version of these were between 8 and 12 feet tall and weighed in the range of 300 to 400 pounds each. There were 3 vertical pieces and 3 angled pieces abut a third of the way off the ground to connect them all. 5/8th inch holes were predrilled with a long auger bit and 5/8th inch rebar nails (tapered on one end) were the fasteners. One of these creations had a heavy duty chain coming down from top center which supported a 2 foot diameter globe planter filled with succulents. Well behaved vines climbed up them. Some were patriotic because of the red, white and blue flowering vines growing up them.
