Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Heavenly Angel Ice')

I added Heavenly Angel Ice early last season. I got a great deal on it, only $20 for 8 large fans. (I see Oakes has it for sale at around $50 for what is probably 4 or 5 fans). It is nice and tall, the blooms are large, the substance of the flowers is fantastic, 4-5 way branching, and high bud counts. Compared to my other 'whites'...this one really IS white.

I know a lot of hybridizers have been using this one to work on their whites, but I plan to mix this one with lots of oddballs and hope for a nice surprise.

I got hooked on this after a friend here on ATP gave me a bloom from her garden. Personally, her bloom convinced me that this was a better near-white for my garden than Margo Reed Indeed was (personal preference, of course), so I picked up Heavenly Angel Ice (HAI) at a local nursery.



It (re)bloomed soon after I purchased it in the late season, making it the latest (re)blooming daylily in my garden last year, I believe. Sadly, frost killed the last couple of blooms and the one or two developing seedpods that were on it. The first (re)blooms I had on it bloomed on 9/23/15 and went until 10/11/15, when it finally surrendered to the frost.

It had 4- or 5-way branching, but I don't recall the budcount.

It seems to be an easy pod and pollen parent.

HAI seems to have more peach undertones than the yellow-green undertones of Margo Reed Indeed.

Edited to add: has thicker scapes than MRI (if you like tall, delicately swaying flowers, MRI might be more for you). Also has a little better substance to the petals than a lot of other UFO dips; thicker than MRI, Starman's Quest, etc.

I love this daylily. So elegant. It's one that I MUST get transplanted this year. As you can see in my photo it is in a lot of shade and just gets a little afternoon sun. It has never reached the registered height, I'm sure because of the lack of sun. I'm anxious to see how it improves after I transplant this summer.

Often daylilies will actually be taller in the shade because they "reach up " for the sun. Of course that does not mean always be taller in the shade, I feel with enough shade it would stunt the growth.

HAI does not like to be disturbed. It can also take a while to get established enough to bloom. Definitely not the registered 36" here. More like 28-30. Not really 8 inches here either, but not in a prime space. Gossard says it does not like heavy fertilizing.

I have had Heavenly Angel Ice since the spring of 2014. It hasn't done real well. Which I think to where it planted. The soil is not the best. It comes up but is not blooming. Will work this spring to make conditions better.

HAI has done relatively well for me. It gets shaded morning sun but full afternoon sun until about 6 pm. It has multiplied well and blooms reliably. Difficult pod fertility for me, don't recall having tried the pollen that much. Where I have it, which arguably is a less than ideal spot, it's about 30 inches but the bud count varies between 20 and 25.

It did take 2 seasons to really get established. It came back readily those 2 years but definitely wasn't blooming as it has been since. I like the bloom. It's nice with decent substance. If I had a better spot I would move it but it will have to stay where it is for now!

HAI is a poor performer for me. Planted as a double in '16, it is now 5 fans. It is planted in a prime location, not crowded and lots of sun. It has a 24" scape with 8 buds on three way branching. I will likely give it one more year based on previous comments but I find Margo Reed Indeed a better plant also with far more blooms here in my northern garden..

I planted HAI in Spring 2021. It hasn't grown any bigger, still two fans but it's a fairly shady location. It had a very small showing this year, 4 flowers between June 30- July 16. Not very impressive. Compared to Margot Reed Indeed who has gone crazy in the same time period, not doing too well. I'll continue to monitor.

2023 update…a better season for Heavenly Angel Ice…but only marginally. It is now at 3 fans and bloomed from July 9-28 with 6 blooms…which is only two better than last year. I guess it's still establishing.
