I figured this winter will be a good time to label all of my daylilies and plants - now if I can just find what I want for labels since I DON'T want to redo them all the time - kind of lazy that way Whistling Whistling Whistling Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Well, I already see that the stakes (galvanized) I bought the past two years are not going to cut it, I will be switching to the stainless steel ones when I purchase the next ones.

The stainless are great Larry, You will like them much better. I have been gradually switching to the stainless. They are expensive so I only buy 25 at a time.

Yes, I found one on the ground I thought the critters had dug up, only to find it had not been dug up, but had corroded and collapsed.

My hard red clay base eats them nearly as fast as it consumes organic material. I've never tried the stainless ones.

I'm cheap so I use the same aluminum impress tags I use on my trees. Instead of making a loop with the wire I twist the wire and poke it in the ground at the base of each plant. It sucks to have to bend down to read the tags but you get 100 for $10 and they last for years.

Great thread!
I have been using a lot of different plant markers, bamboo stakes cut down with survey tape
but the tape does not last through the winters, then recently I bought the plastic plant markers
and wrote on them with a black paint pen, this will be the first winter for those so will have to
see how they hold up.
Ediblelandscapingsc, where did you purchase the aluminum impress tags?
Lasting for years is a good thing!

Like Larry, I bought the galvanized stakes and they have corroded over the last few years. I have a few stakes that I've just broken off the bottom where it was eaten away and just made the stake shorter. I have not bought stainless steel yet since I still have many galvanized ones left. But if I can afford them in the future, my stakes will definitely be stainless steel.

I use the Brother P-Touch labeler to make labels for the stakes and I have not had to replace any of the labels. They have outlasted the stakes, have not peeled or faded. I love my labeler!!

When I make my labels, I do put an asterisk behind the name if it is a tet. That way, if I want to dab pollen, I know whether I am crossing with the same ploidy.

I buy my Kincaid plant markers from Dan Bachman. They are worth the $$. I used the galvanized markers too, they had a hard time making it through more than one Wisconsin winter. Our club uses the stainless for our guest plants, they are the only way to go...

You can find them by going to his store at his website. Under garden tools

Hope this helps Smiling

I use a Brother P-Touch labeler, have only had to replace a few of them after a very snowy winter. The plant stakes I use are See Fine have had them for many years and they still are going strong, once in a while one of the stakes will break off then the stake is just a littler shorter as I purchased the longer stakes this rarely happens. On occasion one of the plates that holds the label will get bumped and come off, it is easy to take a pliers and reattach the plate. I have used these stakes for at least fifteen years so they do last a long time.

Many of my labels that I did with my P-Brother label maker actually faded quite a bit this summer..... especially the ones in my southern facing garden bed. :(

Right now, I am experimenting with sharpie on white plastic knives. Will see how they fair in the ground. I also keep maps of my gardens.

I use these labels, in galvanized, and after 6 or 7 years, I've had zero break on me. I love them. You can order the wires in stainless now too, which is great for anyone who doesn't want galvanized. Shipping is super fast, and the prices are great.
https://everlastlabel.com/inde...

For labels, I use a P-Touch label maker and I use the TZ tape with the strong adhesive. I've never had a label fade or fall off, and this is with a huge pile of snow on top of them, year after year, before moving to Idaho.

Many people complain, just like I did, about the label maker wasting tape. It does do that. If you are making lots of labels, just put a space between the names, and cut them apart after printing. It saves a huge amount of tape that way! Not my idea, but I was thrilled when I saw it!

I have a cheap one! It's the PT-1090. I think I paid $15 for it, and it has worked perfectly for years.
