I just wanted to let all of you fellow "addicts" Rolling on the floor laughing know that Fred (spunky1) has listed various 2009, 2010, and 2011s on the lily auction. They are double fans, triple fans, and some are even 4 fans; and at really good starting bids. He also has 3 of his new intros on there.

Would like to add that I sold out of LILLIAN'S VAPOR TRAIL two weeks ago due to the new web site. I was only able to put two on tha auction and both sold well. I still have a few but don't want to come up empty at ship time if something happens to one and it doesn't make it over winter. I had more of Lillian's White Lies than LVT so it's still selling. I am also having LVT treated by two different persons. I will have a treated Lillian's Thin Ice in the fall, Jane Trimmer will see about 200 seedlings bloom from it this year and will send me photos of the babies. Kathleen and Jane have been talking everyday for a week about Grandkids and daylilies, a lot more about the kids.

Yes, you will definitely love them. I will possibly be entering 3 daylily shows next May and I sure hope they all will have blooms ready to open so I can take them. I won "Best Large" this year in Pensacola with LILLIAN'S BANGING MANGOS so hopefully I will get a repeat next year.

OH me too!! You'll have to keep the best for your show plants. What a wonderful priviledge. I sure hope you can go and have loads of fun and many wins.

Do you have pictures for this past year's shows? I'd love to see them.

Blessings Mona

Wellllll, I just spent a very pleasant hour scrolling down through the May 2011 entries. AWESOME WONDERFUL FANTASTIC and I could go on because I know a lot of adjectives!!

There are some of the best photos of blooms in May. The photos of the Daylily Shows have filled me with questions, so here goes:

Who can enter? Must you be a member of the local club?
Who furnishes the vases?
Do you win those wonderful pieces of crystal that I saw?
How do you groom the scapes for show?
Do you grow a certain scape to take or is it just chance that one is blooming so beautifully?

Mechele, how awesome to win your first show!!! Yes, I know you're happy but I can see why Fred would just be tickled pink to have you win!!! Also, I need to be put on Fred's list of admirers. He must be one awesome guy!!

You have some of the most wonderful plants, wow! I have a new list to add to my already huge list. A few that I saw on that thread that I need:
Sense of Wonder
God Save the Queen
Pandora's Treasure
Happpy Happy
Heather Grace
Keep on Dreaming
Duke of Gascone

Also, Lyle has sent you some wonderful seedlings:
Exotic Treasure x Blue Lake
Rock Solid x GSTQ
Spc Starbust x Kawanza

Now, I'm wondering how to get on Lyle's list so I might grow some of his seedlings???

Ok, I'm going back to look at the June 2011 Pictures. What a great way to spend a dreary November day!!

Blessings, Mona

Mona,

Anyone can enter the daylily shows. You do not have to be a member of a local club. However, in order to win the rosettes at the head table you must be a member of the AHS (can join day of the show)

The club/organization furnishes everything that is needed for the show (except flowers) including VASES. And there is no fee to enter (I think most do it that way)

Different clubs use different awards. The Mobile Club does the crystal like you saw. The Pensacola club has various candle holder/decorations and the BEST IN SHOW gets a crystal award.

Usually the local club has a grooming clinic the month before the shows you could go to. Clean and green is the way to go. But basically you make sure there is no brown. If there is a bloom scar then you would just snip off the tip where it is brown. If the little leafy part on the bract has a brown tip just snip off the brown (in the shape of a V like it would be naturally). Wipe the scape with a baby wipe or paper towel to get off the environmental/spray residues that dull it. With a Q-tip clean between the branches and anywhere else that spider webs may be and to dab off any fallen pollen on the bloom. If you have any buds that are rubbing the open bloom you would want to snip them off. If the scape has any insect damage you can try and scrape it off if it's not too deep, but sometimes it's best to leave it because if you scrape too much it makes it look worse. # 1 most important thing is DO NOT use a green marker to cover any brown up. You will be automatically disqualified and the judges will move on to the next flower. You can groom at home or at the shows you can get there early and they usually have tables set up for this sole purpose and they can guide you on what to do. Don't think your scape has to be perfect because it doesn't. Most judges will only take off a point or two for certain things therefore, you could have 5 things wrong that 1 point each was taken off for and still get a purple ribbon and possibly go to the head table.

99% of the time it is just chance of what is blooming that day or what you know will open that day (some people cut the scapes the night before and put in water). I cut these the night before since I had to drive an 1 1/2hrs to the Mobile Show and had to be there early since I was a clerk. Not all opened like I had hoped, but most did. Even if they are not open all the way that morning you can still take them because they will continue to open and usually will open all the way by time the judging starts.

Some people grow certain daylilies just for this purpose. If you are hybridizing with them then you wouldn't want to cut the scape off if you had pods on them, but if you have enough scapes that cutting one off won't bother you then do it. I was using my garden daylilies and did cut off some from the hybridizing area because I hadn't set anything on them and had plenty of other scapes on them to use. When I moved I had to get rid of a lot of my daylilies and only kept the ones that I had gotten purples in the show with. So this year I will use those plus I will use some of my hybridizing daylilies as well. You just never know what will be blooming the day of the show.

Some people think it's hard to be in the shows, but it's not. It's pretty fun. And you don't have to take a lot of scapes either. It only takes one to win. You could start with say five just to get your feet wet.

Yes, go check out Lyle's over on the cubit http://cubits.org/desertdaylil...

He usually has a sale or two each year with named cultivars and his seedlings for members of his cubits (so go join). I love his seedlings and have used them in my hybridizing. Because of the difference in soil and/or climate, some of mine ended up a different color than his. Mine are more on the pinkish(magenta side) where his is purple. Some of my other daylilies do the same such as SENSE OF WONDER. It will be more of an orangy pink instead of almond pink.

MOREEEE!!!!! I love you too! I need to add to my telephone book size wish list. I don't have enough!!!

Wow at the difference in your colors. I first discovered this issue when I bought Strawberry Candy. I saw all these beautiful pictures of a pink daylily with an eye and feel in love. So, I splurged and bought one baby fan. I waited two years for it to bloom and was just about to burst!! It blooms orange!! Not neon orange but a mid peach color. I wanted the pink, not this orangy color. I bee lined into the house to do a search online and found that alot of folks had orange and a lot had pink. It seemed to changed color on each search.

I haven't seen this with the blues and pinks. I would think that you had two different plants. There doesn't seem to be as much on Rock Solid and GSTQ but the others is tremendous. Yes, I would like one of the ET x BL.

I'll email you when I get your payment in the mail, should be tomorrow.

Thanks for the info on showing daylilies. I find this so interesting. I think you winning your first show is just plain awesome. I bet you were about to burst and Fred was grinning from ear to ear!! To witness someone being so happy is a thrill for everyone. I bet you said a small prayer over your scapes setting in the floor the night before. Sleep probably was not for you that night at all.

I haven't joined the cubits site, so here I go again. I will give another place a try. I've loved this one and "Growing Daylilies Together". I've been on GardenWeb Daylilies for several years and it's a great place!!

Thanks for all the info. I'll write back after going over to the Cubits site. blessings, Mona
