I always have some mandevilla... as it's such a cooperative bloomer... I've had lots of them... I'm partial to the reds... and the white for night viewing... and I love the look of the new Sun Parasol's.. with it's deep red velvety flowers and the yellow throat color..
this year I planted a Ruby Star ? [ came unnamed ] in a container under a trellis in this garden I planted for the second time this year... after it was planted the first time... we had to remove everything and have the roof decking redone by the building... new roof and then the concerte pavers were suspended above it on these lifts in the corners of the sections of concrete... so we redid everything this year.. and the got a mandevilla... although they will just be leaving it there through the winter .. and getting another in the spring.. Does anyone want it... ?? village pickup only
anyway the reason I write.. is that the gardening info on them is as follows...
Do not over fertilize and force more flowers. This plant will not overwinter in temperatures under 65º F and flowering will slow down if temperatures are near 65º F
well it's deep falll here in NYC... we've already had a 5" snow fall...not bad considering the havoc it played as the storm moved up into CT and MA , VT... temperatures have been down pretty low.. after the snows... which stuck around for a few days... and seldom has it been what you'd call warm since.. although real nice after the snows..
Yesterday I was at the garden I mentioned.. getting some measurements for a marble sill ..and checked the garden to see how the springs work was weathering.. and about fell over ... the ruby star was there... up covering the structure I had sat it upon this spring... and not only was it doing well... but two weeks after the snows... it was in full bloom... dispite what the info site says.. is this a common behavior ??
anyone want a cold hardy mandevilla... sorry the photo quality is a bit sub par on the I Phone
I was going to paste them together in a panarama but the machine seems to have lost the program..
