I don't know where it came from, it could be a seedling but I'm not sure. I did get a a double cultivar as a bonus but I thought I had potted it up and not planted in any of my beds. Thanks for any suggestions!

If you have a list of what you have ordered, we might be able to help you figure it out. But, if it just appeared and you don't have a clue what it is - I would just call it a No ID. With 70,000 intros and many, many thousands of seedlings that have been sold or given away - there really is no possible way to know what you have. It would always be just a guess.

I don't have record of the bonus that was sent to me, several sellers I've bought from don't put their bonuses on their packing list, they just include it with the other plants.

If the tag gets blown away or something happens to it you're in the position I'm in. I know the odds are slim, but I thought it was worth a try.

Thanks!

In the future, try putting a plastic knife with the name written on it with a Sharpie pen down in the planting hole. Then, at least when you dig and divide, you can find the name. The tags can't blow away that way!

It sure is pretty! Lovey dubby I have a bunch of NOIDs myself and as Juli said it's hard to pin down the name. Just enjoy your lovely plant and hope that it increases each year. The only thing I could suggest is to look in the catalogs, etc. of vendors you have purchased from and perhaps it will show up there.

Jean, I don't think I have seen the flower in your avatar before. It sure is pretty! Maybe something we don't grow up here in the north?

Thanks, Juli. It's an offspring from a very old plant my grandmother had, and which now lives in FL. It is struggling to stay alive as it got sunburned one year, drought-stricken another (our pump in our watering system failed), and got nipped by the cold weather we had here in FL before we returned for the winter, but I will say it's pretty resilient. It's an epiphyllum oxypetallum, better known as night blooming cereus, Dutchman's pipe or Queen of the night. It opens only once and at night and has a glorious fragrance. This one lives in our sunroom in Arkansas. The plants got too large to haul outside, however, if you have a smaller plant it can spend the summer outside in the shade but needs to come in before the cold weather hits.

the flowers that are drooping bloomed the night before. This year I had three flushes and the last one was 40 blooms altogether over three nights in four different pots.

The buds take about a month to reach maturity and it is a very long wait.

Mrs. Pollifax had one, too, for any fans of that series (like me--have them all). Read and reread that book so many times, I can almost quote whole paragraphs, but never took time to look up the flower. I like it. Smiling

The plant itself isn't very pretty, however, when it blooms, it makes up for all of that -- sort of like the ugly duckling.

What a great idea! I know your post was from quite a while ago, but I couldn't let it go without thanking you!

Since my memory is strong for things like cultivar names, I don't really need all the plant markers I have. This method would be less obvious (okay...not at all obvious).

Moreover, sun tends to fade Sharpie writing on the white plastic plant label stakes I use. A grease pencil lasts longer, but it's hard to write small/neatly with those. Since your method has the plastic knives underground, they wouldn't fade. (Edit: corrected from "forks" to "knives" for obv reasons.)

Doing this would also be A LOT cheaper than the plant tags I use. Those are $5+ for a bag of 25 at Lowe's. I'll begin doing this with the rather mind-boggling number of daylilies being shipped to me this spring.

Thanks again!
Hardy hibiscus are a hobby, but daylilies are an obsession.

I use a soft pencil to write on my labels. I bought a 6B graphite pencil from a craft store, but an HB works, too. It doesn't fade. If the plastic is slippery, use some fine sandpaper to rough it up a bit.

Sandi, do you remember if the bonus sent was a diploid or a tetraploid?

Ken, you will want to use plastic knives, not forks. Then you can write on the knife blade.

I have heard of people putting the clear Scotch tape over the sharpie on the knife blade to add extra life to the writing while buried.

I haven't had any fade.... but I have drastically reduced the number of plantsI have so it's not much of an issue here now and I no longer use knives, maps are good enough.
