Well, I think I've done it again. Not even the end of March and it is already filling up. I would suspect that a lot of stuff will need to be transplanted into bigger pots in few weeks and then it will be cramped for space. Guess I better start organizing the supplies and move them elsewhere.

Joanne - This is my first year starting my own tomato seeds. Since it looks like you're using bubble wrap (?) to insulate, do you think it allows enough sunlight (when the sun shines) for the tomatoes? Only asking because my plants are getting pretty tall. I'm keeping the temps inside the gh lower at night but they sure seem to be growing fast. Is it better to keep them under lights?

Oh for sure the light is degraded with the bubble wrap, but it is still better than under artificial light.

Here's a picture from Thursday March 18

Petunias are coming along slowly. perhaps I jumped the gun putting them in the GH a little too soon. Not all were germinated and the cloudy days didn't help but they are coming along

Joanne - I should have explained that I also have the bubble wrap in my little gh and wasn't sure if that's why my tomatoes took off the way they did. I had good luck with some seedlings my DD gave my last year - potting them up and burying them deeper every few weeks. Had great roots - just a lousy summer for growing them (wet, cool and cloudy). Maybe on cloudy days I can stick the plants under the lights?

I removed the bubblewrap this morning. I noticed that the tomatoes would droop at night and I think it's from the exhaust of the propane heater. Our night temps are not as cold as last year, so I decided the GH was better off with better lighting (removing the BW) and also a little more fresh air from leakage.

I am totally out of room. We have a snow storm and it will be cold & wet for the next few days. I still have about 10 trays of 72 cell annuals to pot up into 2-1/2" or 4" and about 40 tomatoes to pot up into 1-gallon. If the weather was nicer, I would insist that people who pre-ordered tomatoes could take them now, but I think they would suffer if they are put indoors near a window.

Hi Joanna,
Can I pick your brain a little? I have a GH but we used the cheap clear panels so heating is nigh impossible. I have a huge fan at the top of my GH that comes one when the temps are high and I can run a regular fan for circulation. Heating is my biggest problem. When you start your seeds in the GH are you heating yours? I can start my seeds in our sunroom but would need to move them out there when they needed to be repotted. B/C I can't heat my GH, I can't put my seedlings out there for fear of them freezing. I guess I would need to start my seeds later in the year instead of Feb. or so b/c of the weather. Any suggestions? I hate that I can't use my GH like I wished I could. I'm thinking the seeds and plants can take heat (with air movement) better than cold. Any advice? Your GH looks great!
Thanks
dawn
