Today's plant of the day for Sempervivum is Hen and chicks (Sempervivum Chick Charms® Gold Nugget).

Looking for something a little different in color? This just might be the sempervivum you are looking for. This is a patented plant so can not be shared or sold unless you have license from Chris Hansen.
This plant can be found in our Plant Database at:
Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Gold Nugget') .

Please join in, if you own this plant! We would love to know more!

Also, please consider adding a Plant Performance Report to the database! Thank you!

Come on, guys... post your 'Gold Nugget' pictures. I know I'm not the only one who has it.
It rained all night but a nice sun break came along so I dashed out and took this picture.
I got this guy from Hansen at the clinic and for reasons I can't remember I put it in a pot. It didn't seem very happy so I relocated it and it seems well established now at least. I'm hoping for some solid growth next year although I don't think this cultivar is particularly vigorous or hardy.

It has proven hardy for me, but is very light on producing offsets. I think the most I have had is 5 or 6 offsets per rosette. That's okay with me, I don't have to worry about it taking over and growing into other colonies.
This photo was taken 2 weeks ago. It is in 1/2 day of afternoon sun and seems very happy with that. I have moved a rosette into a full sun bed last month. Now I will wait and see how it does in those conditions.

I would post one--but it fried Crying
I relocated it to part shade a little too late...it kinda hung on looking like it might recover but it didn't.
I'm so sorry that I was such a bad semp mommy

I know Mountain Crest Gardens has it and will have it available. You can contact them to see when.

Bev, it is looking healthy, just needs a little more sun. Good luck on that with the weather we have been having. Whistling

Sorry I haven't been around much. Working crazy hours for several months on a temp job. Anyway, did manage to snap a quick picture of my 'Gold Nugget' yesterday morning, even though it had some frost on it. Got it last spring, mine seems to be happier in the ground than it was in a pot. I will probably be offering this one again next spring. Sold out in a hurry last year.

Chris, it looks wonderful. Love the colors with the frost. I forgot that you were handling 'Gold Nugget' at your online nursery.
Another great source for those looking to acquire this one.
Bet Chris would take pre-orders?

Yes, I could take preorders Lynn. Big Grin

Once it was in the ground it really started putting out chicks.

Interesting about the ground thing for offsets. Is that a regular thing about semps...ground vs pots related to offsets or not?

Haven't noticed that with all semps Bev, but certain one's seem to produce more chicks if they're planted in the ground.

@cwhitt, they should do great in Ohio - I live in Wisconsin.

And Chris Hansen is in Michigan. I agree with Chris, they should do very well in Ohio.

Bev, over the years I have noticed that some will produce quite good in containers, and some not so good. I never made notes on which ones though. Sad

We should all make some notes about that. I have found many of mine seem happier in pots rather than in the ground, but that is possibly due to the fact that if the potted ones don't look happy, I change their location....more shade, or more sun.

Karen I can see where yours would be much happier in containers.

Yes, it makes it much easier to be sure they're happy. My one bed in the ground is doing well, but the semps seem smaller overall, and right now they're a lot darker in color than the others in pots. I'm not sure why the color variation because all of the pots are outdoors too.
