My question is fairly unrelated to farming. I have some duck that live about 2 blocks from my house. I have not gotten a pic of them yet, but I plan too. I live in N.C.Tx. There is a small pond/tank 2 acres behind my house. There always ducks on this pond throughout the year. I would like to gain ID's for them. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction with out a photo for now.

Small/Medium sized Ducks. All Black with white tips on their wings. They also have white/light grey bills. Not able to tell if there is differences between male and female. I'm sure that narrows my numbers down a lot LOL but I don't have pics yet. Hopefulyl I can get them soon.

TIA

Stephanie the only duck that fits that description with that coloring in my Birds of North America field guide is the White-winged Scoter, the only thing is it doesn't show it in NC Texas. Blinking Google it and see what you think. Shrug!

Are they different birds because the first one looks like an American Coot and the other one could just be a Juvenal coot. With that photo angle it also kind of looks like a Pied-billed Grebe, it can be a little difficult to ID them in winter.

American Coot looks right for the black one. I tip my hat to you. The brown one looks like a youngin' to me but I know nothing about ducks. These are the only ones here so far. It could be a different kind but I don't know for sure.

Is a coot a duck? Blinking

I'm pretty sure the brownish one is a young Coot. They are not ducks, they are in a different water bird category with Rails and Gallinules.

Your welcome! I tip my hat to you.
