The color is described as "light buff"

According to wikipedia "The first recorded use of the word "buff" to describe a colour was in The London Gazette of 1686, describing a uniform to be "...a Red Coat with a Buff-colour'd lining".[4] It referred to the colour of undyed buffalo leather, such as soldiers wore as some protection..."

In other words, "light yellow"

Yellow Daylilies are my favorite!

Bill Monroe of LA showed me a picture of this daylily on his phone several years ago at a convention . Bill and Ann Monroe from Baton Rouge are two of the nicest daylily people ever, for any who don't know them! Bill (as well as his deceased father) both served as Registrar for AHS in years past, and Bill also won AHS'a top award some years ago, the Helen Field FIscher Gold Medal . Nowadays, if you attend an AHS convention, you might see Bill going around at the dinners taking pictures of people.

At any rate, Bill had seen this daylily growing in a garden wherever we were touring that day (Asheville convention, maybe?) and told me that it's hybridizer, Edith Sholar, had named it for his son, Todd, when Todd was a little boy. Todd is now all grown up with kids of his own. I liked the story of how this one came to be named, and believe they had visited her garden and seen this one day, and she let Todd pick the seedling.

Todd Monroe has been here a few years in a very undesirable location in the garden. Nevertheless it has continued to do well. Starts here in June and bloom for quite awhile. Always a pleasure to see it blooming.

Todd Monroe is likely one of the nicest daylilies that I grow. I cannot remember what year I planted it; seems it has always "been there" in the gardens. The best feature is its ability to set large numbers of blooms in all kinds of weather conditions. Drought, storms and extreme winter cold are always occurring here, but this plant seems to thrive in all of it. I highly recommend it to gardeners.

Leon, that is a beautiful photo.'Todd Monroe' looks like a good garden variety type daylily does anyone grow it down in a warm climate?

Larry thanks. I'm not sure about a "warmer" climate, but our summers up here can be blazing hot & humid. This does not seem to harm its growth & flowering. I would say Alabama would not be harmful as far as weather conditions go. I would say "yes" it would do OK there.

Leon, I was more concerned about the "warmer " winters here being 'Todd Monroe' is a dormant. I grow quite a few dormants (close to sixty) that do pretty well here with our normally warm winters, but this year seems to be an exception so far. I would also love to know how susceptible
to rust it is down here.

It is a lovely daylily, but judging from the pictures I wouldn't call it 'buff' which is generally used to mean pale beige (at least over here), this colour is MUCH prettier than buff!

I think that sometimes that is why it is difficult to choose daylilies as what is 'bright pink' to one person, and registered as such, would be described as pale pink or soft pink by others. I'm thinking of ones like Siloam Double Classic, for example, registered as Bright Pink but it isn't a shade that I would ever call 'bright' pink, rather more of a pastel pink or pale pink and there are others where I read the description and then look at the pictures and they aren't the colour I expect at all.

Larry, sorry I misunderstood. I'm not sure about the winters there, but they seem like "spring" up here comparatively. Our winters here can be brutal (-14 here last week). Snow cover is helpful for protection against thawing & re-freezing. I get some rust here and there on some but nothing serious, and I haven't seen any on Todd M. I use a mild spray of sulfur water (natural) for protection on many perennials, and this helps.
These pictures are from a few years ago showing how they're planted in my gardens. I've got them all over the place it seems.This should give an idea of the health of the plants. Hope this helps somewhat.



@Scatterbrain Nikki, I agree with your color assessments. Some of the catalog pictures are very different than the actual blooms of many varieties. Notably, Siloam Merle Kent, Strawberry Candy, Elegant Candy & Daring Dilemma. At least that is my view. And the color buff is also a matter of opinion. This is not to criticize, but only a personal observation.

Maybe they should be registered as 'pantone colour -', then everyone can look it up and get a better idea, but then I suppose colour monitors are different too----oh, well!🤣

There is a breeder or two who does use Pantone to classify the color of the flower. Can't think of who offhand...
