Dave, is there anyway we can have links automatically open new tabs/new windows? Or had you already decided against that based on your greater understanding of things? Personally, it drives me crazy to click a link and have it open in the same tab ATP is in - out of all the places I hang out online, this is the only one that does that, so I never remember to right-click and open in new tab.

If it's a hassle or poor business sense, ignore me, but surely I'm not the only one who prefers links to open in new tabs. Could we make it a profile preference, maybe?

Mary, hold down your control button when clicking on the link, and it will open in a new tab. It will become automatic to you after a couple of times.

I usually right-click on links and choose the Open in New Tab option. Same thing would work with Open in New Window option.

Ooooh, I like that control key idea. Just tried it.
I had been doing the right click and choosing new tab. The control key is faster.

That's what I do, but with Mary too. Would love to have a new tab open up.

control C = copy (after highlighting what you want to copy)
control X = cut (after highlighting what you want to cut)
control V = paste (put the cursor where you want to paste first)
control S = save (changes to your files, ie - jpg, doc, xls)
control P = print self-explanatory!!

Y'all, I wasn't asking for keyboard shortcuts to open new windows - I even said in my original post that I *don't want* to have to remember to right-click and open in new tab (not sure I knew about ctrl-click, though - handy!).

I was asking why it doesn't automatically open a new window/tab so I don't have to remember to use a keyboard shortcut. I don't need to use keyboard shortcuts on any other internet board I visit -- blogs open new tabs, message boards open new tabs, facebook opens new tabs... it really should be de rigeur for any website to automatically open external links in a new tab (in my opinion). It's more friendly to the user, keeps the original website website open on their screen, etc.

I have around twelve places on the Internet that I go every day (6 of them, including ATP, open automatically when I load firefox). ATP is the only one of the 12 that doesn't open links in a new window. So when I click a link here, I have to consciously remember to add an extra keystroke before clicking.

It might be that the underlying software here makes that difficult to code, or it might be that Dave hadn't thought of it, or he has a good reason for not doing it. I don't know, so I'm asking the question, because it's a minor irritant in my day when I click an external link here. It's the only thing I don't like about ATP, honestly, and it can happen several times in one browsing session, depending on what I'm reading.

Dave's position has always been to never program software to make assumptions on behalf of the user. Your browser's default is to open the link in the same window, to change that behavior is forcing the user to do something else.

For the record, I'm with you all, and I agree that these days, almost every website opens the link in another tab, and I like that much much better.

I'm pretty sure I had firefox set to open a new tab, cause it's what I prefer, but I've been wrong before and will be wrong again.

well, Bummer! Firefox doesn't give me an option to automatically open links in a new tab. Any chance Dave could make it a user preference in our profile, or is that a hassle? (he's allowed to say no)

It's like a birthday gift. Another thing learned. Thank you so much Trish, middle click is even better. I will us it from now on.

Mary, I use Firefox and it works.
Right Click on a link, like the one in your signiture line. First option should be "open link in a new tab"
