I purchased Lady Betty Fretz in the spring 2016. A pretty flower but not a vigorous grower here. It was purchased as 2 fans and last year it was only 3 fans I have hopes that the third year is the charm. It has bloomed but so far only 1 bloom the first year and 2 blooms the second. I don't give up on a plant until the 4th year and if I still like the bloom but not the performance it will be sent to the mixed bed where will not be used for hybridizing.

This one did not do well here in southern Ohio. No vigor, low bud count, and shorter scapes than registered. An occasional flower was very nice, but generally, the pictures in the database flatter the reality here. Edge and contrast were much more subdued here.

LBF was planted as a double fan in 2015. This is an image at 1 year here. I gathered stats for its 2nd year. It bloomed late July at only 16" high and a bud count of only 6 with 3 way branching. It has increased but slowly. Like Ina, I will give it prime garden space for another 2 seasons but I need to see some improvement in performance.

Sadjy, the sweet lady for whom this was named passed away recently. I had the pleasure of meeting her some years ago.

That's too bad, I had not heard that. She purchased the plant with the option to name it at a daylily club auction for around $2,500 US ($4,000 Cdn) back in the early 2000s.

For many years, Lady Betty sat at three fans for me. I moved it last year, and it increased to five. I may have finally found its sweet spot. LBF is rarely the registered height for me, but the flowers are lovely and ornate here so it stays.
